How to Add a Digital Signature to a PDF for Free (No Upload, No Signup)
Turns out, there is a free way that takes about 30 seconds and keeps your document on your device the entire time.
Why Most Signing Options Feel Wrong
Print-sign-scan: Works, but it assumes you have a printer, a pen, and a scanner nearby. In 2026, that is a lot of hardware for one signature.
Adobe Acrobat: The standard tool, but it costs around $20 per month. Overkill if you only sign a few documents a month.
Free online signature tools: Most of them upload your PDF to a server first. Your contract, your signature, possibly your tax information — all sitting on someone else's computer while their backend processes it. Even if they promise to delete your file, the upload already happened.

I open a browser tab and use a client-side signing tool.

Upload your PDF from your computer or phone
Choose your signature type:
Type your name and pick a signature font
Draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad, finger, or stylus

That is it. The server never sees your file.
Two Types of Signatures
Typed signature: Enter your name and choose from several signature-style fonts. Pick a color. Place it on the signature line. This works great for contracts, proposals, and forms where a clean signature looks professional.
Drawn signature: Use your finger, stylus, mouse, or trackpad to draw your actual signature. This feels more personal and is useful when someone expects your handwritten signature.
Once placed, you can drag, resize, and rotate the signature until it looks right.

Freelance contracts and invoices
Rental agreements and lease renewals
Tax forms and permission slips
Approval documents and internal sign-offs
For basic signing, browser-based tools are enough. If you need certificate-based digital signatures with audit trails, that is when a desktop PDF editor becomes worth it.
