How to Compress PDFs Without Uploading Them to a Server (Free, No Signup)
My laptop has a folder called "Too Big to Email." You probably have one too. That scanned receipt from last week, the contract that's 32MB because someone pasted four HD photos into a Word doc, the resume that the job portal refuses because the limit is 25MB.
For years, the only solution was to upload the file to some random website and hope it actually gets deleted. Or buy Adobe Acrobat and pay $20 a month for a feature that should be free.
There's a better way now.

When I Actually Need This
Emailing a contract — The signed scan is 8MB and the recipient's inbox rejects it. Compress to Medium and it's 2MB. Send.
Submitting to a portal — Job applications, government forms, school registrations. They all have strict file size limits. Usually 10–25MB.
Sharing a report — The PDF has screenshots, charts, maybe some high-res photos. It's 50MB. Nobody needs that for a quick review.
Sending on WeChat / WhatsApp — Mobile file sharing has limits too. A compressed PDF sends instantly instead of buffering for minutes.
Cloud storage — Smaller files sync faster, take less space, and are cheaper to share.
How Compression Actually Works
PDFs get large for a handful of reasons:
High-resolution images — Scans and embedded photos are the biggest culprit. A single 4MB photo in a PDF can't be shrunk by removing metadata.
Embedded fonts — Some PDFs package entire font families even though the document only uses a dozen characters.
Repeated edits — Each save can leave behind old versions of objects.
Vector complexity — Diagrams with thousands of paths add up.
Compression tackles the big ones — mainly images. The tool in my browser extracts each image from the PDF, re-encodes it at a lower quality, and puts it back. Fonts and metadata get cleaned up too.
Three compression levels handle different scenarios:

If a server handles compression:
Your file sits on someone else's disk, even temporarily
You wait in a queue while the server processes it
The output might re-encode images multiple times, losing quality
You have no idea what they do with your data afterward

You control the quality level

Works offline after the page loads
For contracts, resumes, financial records, or anything sensitive, this isn't a nice-to-have. It's the only method I trust.
Does It Work on Mobile?
Yes. You can compress PDFs from your phone's file manager, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or email attachments. The interface adapts to mobile screens. For quick fixes — especially on WeChat or WhatsApp where file size limits bite the most — it's honestly perfect.
Limitations (Being Honest)
Already compressed PDFs won't shrink much. If the PDF has already been optimized, there's not much left to remove.
Image-heavy files trade quality for size. Crank compression to High and photos can look soft. Use Medium as a safe default.
Very large scanned PDFs (300MB+) can take a few seconds and use significant RAM. For those, a desktop tool is more reliable.
Text-only PDFs rarely compress much. If a document is mostly text with small embedded fonts, you might see 5–10% at best.
For everyday documents — contracts, resumes, reports, scans — none of this is usually a problem.
A Pro Tip: Prevent Large PDFs Before They Happen
If you're creating the PDF yourself (from Word, PowerPoint, or a scanner):
Before exporting:
Compress images in the source file. Don't paste 4MB photos into a Word doc.
Use standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman) instead of embedding custom fonts.
Remove unused pages, hidden slides, or extra images before exporting.
When exporting:
Choose "Standard" or "Smallest File Size" PDF preset in your export dialog.
If scanning, pick 150 DPI for screen viewing. 300 DPI is overkill for most documents.
These habits save more time than fixing large files after the fact.
