How to Convert PDF to Word for Free Without Uploading Your File

I needed to edit a PDF contract last week. It was a scanned agreement someone sent over, and all I had was the PDF. Normally that means either paying for a converter or uploading the file to a website and hoping it doesn't get stored somewhere.

I built a simpler option. It runs entirely in the browser.

What It Does

The PDF to Word converter extracts the selectable text from a PDF and puts it into an editable .docx file.

Steps:

  1. Open en.sotool.top/pdf-to-word/

  2. Upload your PDF

  3. Wait a few seconds while the text is extracted

  4. Download the .docx file

  5. Open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice

Nothing uploads to a server. The file stays on your device the entire time.

What "Text-Only" Means

This tool extracts text, not formatting. That means:

  • ✅ Text content is preserved

  • ✅ Paragraphs are kept

  • ✅ Multiple pages become a single document

  • ❌ Tables, columns, and exact layouts may be lost

  • ❌ Embedded images are not extracted

  • ❌ Scanned PDFs (images of text) will not convert

For documents that are mostly text — reports, contracts, essays, meeting notes — the output is usually clean and easy to edit. For heavily formatted documents, a desktop tool is still the better choice.

Why Browser-Based Works Here

Most PDF to Word converters work like this:

  1. You upload your file to their server

  2. Their backend converts it

  3. You download the result

That process works, but it means a copy of your document lives on someone else's server, even if only for a few minutes. For legal, medical, or financial documents, that is a real privacy risk.

A browser-based converter does the work inside your tab:

  • The PDF is read locally

  • Text is extracted with pdf.js

  • A .docx file is generated with the docx library

  • The result is downloaded directly

You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network and watching no upload happen.

When to Use This Tool

  • Contracts and agreements that need small edits

  • Meeting notes or reports that are mostly text

  • Academic papers where you lost the original Word file

  • Legal forms you don't want to upload to a third party

  • Receipts and invoices where you just need the text

Limitations to Know

  • Text-only output. Formatting, images, and complex layouts are not preserved.

  • No OCR. Scanned PDFs or image-based PDFs will produce no usable text. The tool will show a clear message if it detects this.

  • Large PDFs. Files up to 100 MB and 500 pages are supported, but very large files may take longer.

  • Font and spacing. The .docx output uses standard formatting. It will not match the original PDF pixel for pixel.
