How to Split a PDF Online for Free (No Upload, No Signup)

I get PDFs that are too big all the time. A 50-page report where I only need pages 5–8. A scanned contract where every page needs to go to a different department. A merged file with three documents inside that I want to separate again.

For a long time my options were bad. Open Adobe Acrobat and pay for a subscription. Upload the file to a random website and hope they deleted it afterward. Or print the pages I wanted and scan them back in.

There is a simpler way now.

What I Do Instead

Open a browser tab. Upload the PDF. Pick how I want to split it. Download the files.

  1. Open the page in any browser

  2. Upload your PDF

  3. Choose your split mode:

    • By page range: type something like 1-3, 5, 7-9

    • Per page: save every page as its own PDF

  4. Click "Split PDF"

  5. Download the new files

Everything happens in the browser. Your file never uploads to a server.

When This Saves Me Time

Extracting a chapter from a report — The client only needs the executive summary, not the full 40 pages.

Splitting scanned contracts — Each signed page needs to go to a different file or department.

Separating merged PDFs — Someone combined three documents and now you need them back as individual files.

Saving every page separately — A form PDF where each page is a separate submission that needs its own filename.

Creating excerpts for email — Instead of sending a 20 MB file, send just the 3 relevant pages.

Two Ways to Split

By page range is fastest when you know the numbers. Type 2-4, 8, 11-13 and it extracts each range into its own file. So 2-4 becomes one PDF, 8 becomes another, and 11-13 becomes a third.

Per page is better when every page needs to become its own file. You get page_1.pdf, page_2.pdf, and so on. This is useful for batch processing or when each page represents a separate document.

Why Browser-Based Works Here

PDF splitting sounds simple, but a lot can go wrong if a server handles it:

  • Your file sits on someone else's disk

  • You wait in a queue

  • File size limits cut you off

  • The output loses bookmarks, links, or metadata

Doing it locally avoids all of that. The PDF loads into your browser, pdf-lib rewrites the document, and you download the result. No queue, no upload, no retention.

What Stays Intact

When pages are split, the extracted content keeps its original quality:

  • Text and fonts

  • Images and vector graphics

  • Internal links and bookmarks

  • Metadata like title and author

The tool only copies the pages you want. It does not re-render or recompress them.

Limitations (Being Honest)

  • It splits whole pages only. You cannot remove a single paragraph or crop a page with this tool.

  • Page numbering in the viewer is 1-based. Page "5" is the fifth page, not the page labeled "5" if your PDF uses custom numbering.

  • Very large PDFs with hundreds of pages may take a few seconds to process.

  • Multiple downloads may trigger your browser's pop-up blocker. Allow downloads from en.sotool.top if prompted.

For simple page splitting, none of this is usually a problem.
