How to Crop PDF Pages Online for Free (No Upload, No Signup)
I recently received a 20-page PDF contract where every page had a thick black border from scanning. I needed to crop it down, but Adobe Acrobat costs $20/month and every free online tool asked me to upload the file first.
So I built a simple browser tool that crops PDF pages without uploading anything. Here's how it works.
What is PDF cropping?
Cropping removes blank margins from around the content on each page. It's different from trimming (which cuts off the edges) or resizing (which changes the overall dimensions). Cropping narrows the visible area to what actually matters.
Common reasons to crop a PDF:
Remove scan borders from a phone scanner app
Focus on the content by hiding unnecessary whitespace
Reduce file size slightly by shrinking page dimensions
Make a PDF easier to read on a phone screen
The Way I Do It Now
Open a browser tab. Drop your PDF in. Select the pages to crop. Adjust the margins. Download the cropped result. Everything happens in your browser.
The tool:
How it works:
Open the page in any browser
Upload your PDF
Preview the page and adjust crop margins
Apply to all pages or selected pages
Download the cropped PDF
The entire process happens in your browser. The server never sees your files.
Built-In Crop Presets
The tool comes with presets for common situations:
Remove Scan Borders Phone scanners (Adobe Scan, CamScanner, Google Drive) often add a thick black border. This preset detects edges and removes the border automatically.
Custom Margins Type in exact pixel values for top, bottom, left, and right margins. Good for precise layout work.
Center Crop Cuts equal amounts from all sides. Useful when the content is centered and you just want to tighten the framing.
Page-Specific Crop Not every page needs the same crop. You can apply different crop settings to individual pages — handy for mixed documents where the first page has a wider margin.
Before and After: What to Expect
Before cropping:
A 10-page scanned document with black borders: 8.5 × 11 inches per page
File size: 12 MB
Some pages may have content shifted to the left
After cropping:
Clean 7.5 × 10 inch pages
File size: 10.5 MB (about 12% smaller)
Content centered on each page
The file size reduction is modest because cropping removes whitespace, not compressed images. But it makes a visible difference in readability.
Why Use a Browser-Based Cropper?
| Feature | Browser-based | Desktop software | Cloud upload tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| No install | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |
| Files stay private | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Free forever | ✅ | Sometimes | Often limited |
| Adjustable margins | ✅ | ✅ | Sometimes |
| Works on mobile | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |
Because all processing happens in JavaScript on your own device, contracts, financial records, and personal documents never touch a remote server.
When You Might Need More
Browser-based cropping handles most day-to-day needs. If you need to:
Batch-crop hundreds of files
Crop to specific dimensions (like legal-size to letter-size)
Crop scanned documents with complex layouts
Apply OCR before cropping
Then a desktop tool like is worth considering. It runs locally on your computer, so your files stay off the web.
Summary

Upload your PDF
Choose a preset or set custom margins
Apply to all pages or selected pages
Download the cropped PDF
