How to Remove PDF Metadata for Free (No Upload, No Signup)

PDF metadata — the hidden document properties embedded inside every PDF — can contain your name, the software you used, titles, keywords, and sometimes even your computer username. That's information you probably don't want to leak when sharing a file publicly. And unlike visible content, you can't see it by just looking at the pages.

This guide shows how to strip metadata from PDFs directly in your browser using en.sotool.top/remove-pdf-metadata. It's free, runs entirely locally, and your file never leaves your device.

What PDF metadata hides

Every PDF file carries a set of standard metadata fields defined in the document info dictionary:

FieldWhat it revealsRisk level
AuthorYour name or usernameHigh — personal identity
TitleDocument title (often auto-generated)Medium — reveals internal project names
SubjectA short descriptionMedium — can contain confidential context
KeywordsSearch tags inside the fileMedium — can reveal internal jargon
CreatorSoftware that created the original docMedium — reveals software stack
ProducerSoftware that converted to PDFLow-Medium — reveals tooling
Creation/Modification DateWhen you created/edited the fileLow — but reveals timeline

Most PDF readers don't show this information by default, but anyone can extract it in seconds using a file properties dialog, pdfinfo, or exiftool. The information you don't think twice about becomes public the moment you attach the file.

Edit metadata vs. remove metadata

Our Edit PDF Metadata tool lets you change these fields — give your file a professional title, correct the author name, add proper keywords. But sometimes you don't want to change the metadata. You want it gone entirely.

That's what remove-metadata does: it strips all document-level metadata from the PDF, leaving only the visible content (pages, text, images, layout). Nothing else.

This is especially useful when:

  • You didn't create the file — someone sent it to you and you don't know what metadata is embedded

  • You're sharing with an untrusted audience — public posting, forum attachments, open-access repositories

  • You need to comply with privacy requirements — GDPR, internal data handling policies

  • You want a clean slate — remove old metadata before adding fresh properties

How to remove PDF metadata

Go to en.sotool.top/remove-pdf-metadata.

  1. Open the page

  2. Upload your PDF

  3. Review the current metadata shown on-screen

  4. Click Remove to strip all document-level properties

  5. Download the clean PDF

Everything happens in your browser. The server never sees your files.

What gets removed

The tool strips all of these fields:

  • Title — the document's title

  • Author — whoever created it

  • Subject — whatever description was set

  • Keywords — any embedded search keywords

  • Creator — the original software

  • Producer — the PDF generator

  • Creation date / Modification date — file timestamps in the metadata dict

The visible content of your PDF — pages, text, images, fonts, vector graphics, bookmarks, links, annotations — remains intact. Only the document-level property dictionary is cleared.

Note: Metadata removal does not affect the page content stream. If text inside a page body says "Written by John Smith," removing the metadata dictionary won't erase that visible text. It only removes the hidden fields. If you want to remove visible text, you'd need a different tool entirely.

Why browser-based matters for privacy

Here's the irony: if you upload a sensitive file to a cloud service to strip its metadata, the cloud service now has a copy of that file — with all the original metadata. You're trading one privacy problem for another.

Browser-based removal processes everything locally. When you close the tab, the file is gone. No server, no tracking, no data retention.

Real use cases

Use case 1: Job application resume You used a template you found online, or a friend helped format your resume. The original author metadata might still say "Template Designer" or your friend's name. Instead of editing each field individually, you strip everything clean before submitting.

Use case 2: Client deliverables You're sending a proposal, contract, or design mockup to a client. The PDF was generated from Figma, exported from Word, and touched by three different tools along the way. That Producer/Creator trail reveals your internal toolchain. Remove metadata before sending.

Use case 3: Public research posting You're sharing a preprint, dataset, or report on an open-access platform. Metadata from your personal machine — including your username in the Author field — should not be part of the public record. Strip it as a final cleanup step.

Use case 4: Anonymous submissions Whether it's a peer review, an anonymous survey response, or a blind manuscript for a publisher, metadata leaks identity. Removing metadata is the safest approach — you can't forget to edit a field you didn't know existed.

When you might need more

Browser-based metadata removal handles the PDF document info dictionary. If you need:

  • Selective removal: remove some fields but keep others (Author + Title, no Keywords) → use our Edit Metadata tool to selectively clear fields

  • XMP metadata removal: some PDFs store metadata in the newer XMP (XML-based) stream format — our tool handles standard XMP entries too, but very complex XMP trees may need desktop software

  • Remove embedded thumbnails: some PDF editors embed a preview thumbnail in the metadata — this tool clears standard metadata; thumbnail removal may vary by PDF generator

  • Batch-process many files: for dozens of PDFs, a dedicated tool like Wondershare PDFelement may be more efficient
